Baden Street Settlement of Rochester Inc. provides a beacon of hope for families in Northeast Rochester. Founded in 1901 by Therese Katz and Fannie Garson to support Eastern European immigrants, Baden Street Settlement has continuously and dynamically grown to provide a full range of services and facilities to improve the quality of life of adults, children, and families. Today, Baden Street Settlement’s agenda and long-range plan focus on four areas: Family, Education, Health, and Crime/Violence. (more)

Approximately 90% of those we serve are people of color (Black and Latinx.) Baden Street provides an accessible resource within the area known as the Crescent, where nearly 60% of residents live in poverty. This high concentration of poverty comes with problems related to economic stress, including high rates of violence, high rates of teen pregnancy and single-parent families, and health problems associated with poverty like poor nutrition (and associated conditions such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and poor heart health), low birth rate, high infant mortality, drug abuse, HIV/STD, and mental illness.

With empathy and effectiveness, Baden Street responds to these community needs through the efforts of its departments: Emergency and Family Assistance, Mature Adult Resource Center, Child Development Center and Universal Pre-K Program, Education and Youth Development, OASAS Certified Outpatient Clinic, Health Home Outreach, Care Management Services, Intellectual and Developmental Disability Respite Services, and by acting as the host agency for Metro Council for Teen Potential. Service data for 2019 (pre-COVID-19 and representing a typical year) indicates that these services reach over 7,000 people annually.

We share a theory of change consistent with the historic settlement house movement to base services at the neighborhood level, build community by investing in the neighborhood, support healthy children and families, and create ease of access to services. We use this method in combination with various funds for services, leadership, and evidence-based programming for neighborhood residents. Baden Street is a well-established and trusted hub of activity in our community, serving generations of families. Baden Street’s staff is local, experienced, and highly qualified; 65% of Baden Street Settlement staff live in or near our service area, and 90% live in the City of Rochester. Almost 80% of our whole staff is composed of people of color, and on the leadership team, over 90%.
